INTEREST IN THE ARCTIC IS HEATING UP, BECAUSE THE ARCTIC IS HEATING UP! This presentation will outline some of the issues and opportunities facing Canada - and recent actions taken - especially within the international/geopolitical context. There will be some "myth busting" too, particularly given the emerging role of the Arctic Council, and the dynamics within the European Union and its member states. These will create technological and public policy opportunities and challenges for this generation of engineers and public servants. Join the dialogue, look into our past (Arctic artifacts will be on display) and have a peek into our future. Following his highly successful presentation on Canada's Arctic at IPAC's annual general meeting, Dr. Peter Harrison has graciously agreed to reprise his presentation at this event.

SPEAKER PROFILE: Dr. Peter Harrison was recently appointed Director of the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University, where he had been the Skelton-Clark Fellow for the 2008-09 academic year. He has served as Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada; Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and The Leadership Network; Senior Research Fellow (Oceans) at the National Research Council; and as an Assistant and Associate Deputy Minister in a variety of departments including Finance. In the Privy Council office he was Secretary to the Priorities and Planning, Operations, and Expenditure Review committees of Cabinet. Dr. Harrison is a professional geographer and he holds a BA from the London School of Economics, an MA from the University of Victoria, and a PhD from the University of Washington.
